Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

Unique Characteristics of the Educational Program:

The Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP): 农村医学学者计划是一个由家庭医学部组织和协调的多部门计划. 其目的是提高学生的教育经验,谁可能希望在农村或小城镇社区实践. The RMSP seeks qualified applicants with an interest in rural health, provides special training and support in the preclinical years, and includes training in a rural community in the clinical years.

Compliance with AAMC Guidelines for Medical Schools Regarding Academic Transcripts: The College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University is in compliance with the guidelines.

Description of Evaluation System: 

Grading System

Phase 1

All required courses and electives taken in Phase 1 of medical school are graded Pass/Fail:
• Pass (P) - Successful completion of all requirements for the course.
• Fail (F) - Failure to meet all the requirements of the course successfully.
•有条件(CO) -在第一次尝试中未通过部分课程要求的临时成绩. A conditional grade requires specific remedial work. 有条件等级的补救尝试的标准不应与原来的要求不同.

• Withdrawal (W) - Withdrawal from a course.

Phase 2

In addition to the grades above, 第二阶段学生在实习和选修课(也被称为课程)方面的学术表现可以使用标准参考的荣誉/高及格/及格/不及格系统进行评估, criterion grading:

Class Rank

In Phase 1 of the medical school curriculum, grades are earned and reported as Pass/Fail. Class rank is not calculated. In the clerkship year of the curriculum, grades are earned and reported as Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail. Class rank is calculated based on the weighted cumulative average of the actual grade earned where numeric values are assigned to the letter grades as follows: Honors = 4; High Pass = 3; Pass (on first attempt) = 2; Pass (on repeat attempt) = 1; and Fail, Fail/Academic Dishonesty = 0. Actual numeric rank from the clerkship year will not be released, 因为班级排名是按类别报告的(“优秀”仅限于前20%的学生,“优秀”包括后面20%的学生. 其余学生被评为“非常好”或“好”,“好”不超过班级的10%.).


Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) Class Rank:

1. Class Rank for MSPE solely will be based on required clerkship year courses.
2. Grades from Phase 1 will not be factored into MSPE class rank.

GATEWAY Exam:

USMLE Requirements: 

Step 1 (4-Year Pathway or 4YP)
All students will prepare to take the USMLE Step 1 before the start of the core clerkship year, which date is published annually in the Upstate Medical University Academic Calendar. 学生在完成基础科学课程后的一年内最多可以尝试三次,以通过USMLE第一步. 

Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (4YP)
Students must take the USMLE Step 2 CK exam by August 15 of their graduation year. Any exception
to this policy requires prior approval of the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education. Students are allowed up to three attempts and one year from the original December 1 deadline to pass the USMLE Step 2 Clinical examination.

USMLE Requirements for Students in the Accelerated MD Pathway (3-Year Pathway or 3YP)
所有参加3YP的学生必须在分配的时间内参加USMLE第一步,并且必须通过第一次尝试才能继续参加3YP.

Clinical Skills Exam (CSE): 
所有学生都必须在医学院第四年开始时通过上州医科大学管理的临床技能考试,以评估沟通的核心临床技能, data collection (history and physical exam), and clinical reasoning (differential diagnosis, diagnostic therapeutic plan).  In addition, 大多数核心见习要求通过特定学科的标准化患者考试,作为医学生整体表现评估的一部分,并通过见习.

Use of Narrative Comments with Grades and in MSPEs: 
Students are evaluated through examinations, both oral and written, and by direct observations in laboratories, discussion groups, and in the clinical setting. Summative evaluation results in a grade for each course, and may also include a narrative evaluation of the student. All of the clinical clerkship grades are accompanied by a narrative. 如果教师和学生之间的个人接触的数量允许对成绩进行知识评估,那么基础科学课程可以包括叙述,否则课程成绩无法反映. Grades and clinical narratives are printed, verbatim in the MSPE.

MSPE Composition and Student Review:
